Google Analytics - Adding Tracking Code

Would you like to know more about the Web traffic click-through patterns and keyword referrals on your site?

BLOGGER ANALYTICS

Blogger users automatically get basic analytics under the Stats tab in your Dashboard.

The Stats tab contains useful info about pageviews and traffic sources for your website traffic. However, some bloggers will want even more "in depth" data to better understand their audiences. You can add Google Analytics tracking into the HTML code of your blog to activate advanced data collection of your website traffic.

USING GOOGLE ANALYTICS

Google Analytics is a free Web-based tool that will give you rich data on how people interact with your Web site content.

To get started, visit Google Analytics and follow these instructions to add tracking code to your site.

NOTE: When copying your code into the HTML of your Blogger template, be careful not to overwrite any existing code! You will paste the embed code right before the </head> tag in your template code.

After you add the code, you'll need to wait up to 24 hours before the tracking data will begin to appear. More information about verifying your setup can be found here.

If you see the yellow triangle icon, your code has not yet been identified as being successfully verified. Wait a bit and refresh the page to see if the icon status changes.

If you see the clock icon, this indicates that tracking code is installed correctly and that it is waiting for data during the first 24 hours after installation. You must check back later to see your first report.

A green check mark indicates that the tracking code is recognized and is successfully gathering information. You still may need to wait a bit before actually seeing any data in your Google Analytics report.

WORDPRESS ANALYTICS

What about analytics on Wordpress? If you are using Wordpress.com (NOTE: this is different than the more advanced Wordpress.org service), then you can not add Google Analytics code at this time. However, there is an internal analytics feed that you can access.

Visit the Wordpress Stats info page to find out about this option.

Once you are logged in to your Wordpress dashboard, you can find your analytics under the Dashboard option. Look for Site Stats to find your reporting data (see picture, right).

Using Wordpress.org (the advanced version of Wordpress)? If so, you can find out more information on adding Google Analytics to Wordpress.org-hosted sites here.
